The media's bias isn't something I like to pounce on often; even if I disagree with an article or headline, I accept its attempt at balance. And as a journalism student, I am constantly seeking objectivity in everything I read, with every newspaper article and news broadcast becoming an object of scrutinizing study and analysis.
I write this as the girl who struggled and succeeded to screen liberal films that expose the Palestinian side of the conflict in a university that is mostly uniform politically. I write this as a Jew who corresponds with Israeli Arab pen pals, as a daily reader of BBC, Haaretz, The New York Times, Al-Jazeera, The Guardian, and The Jerusalem Post, as a student activist who is organizing an apolitical demonstration in Times Square in support of peace in the Middle East:

В следующий шаббат, она повторит этот героический поступок в Бостоне в MIT Shabbaton with Yeshiva University and Stern students, но нас, к сожалению, не будет рядом с ней. Так что, не все мы делаем вместе....

At the very end of the video Avital is standing next to the building where my grandmother's family lived since she was a child. They lived there when her father was arrested and shot in 1937, and soon after her mother was sent to gulag. From that building my grandmother was evacuated during the war and my grandfather came back to it when the war was over. My mom and aunt lived there as children. I finished 3rd and 7th grades while living in this building. Now it is empty, nobody lives there anymore.
В самом конце Таля стоит у дома 3 на Клочковской, где семья моей бабушки жила с ее детства. Они жили там, когда ее отца забрали в 37-м, а потом и маму. Оттуда бабушка эвакуировалась во время войны и туда же вернулся с войны дед. В этом доме росли моя мама и тетя, а я заканчивала 3-ий и 7-ой класс. Сейчас дом пуст, в нем никто не живет.

Avital update
Jan. 13th, 2011 02:20 pmShe answered on the 13-th ring. As I suspected, the flow of text messages has stopped, because Avital has used up the grivnas on her simcard. So, you get regards from the famous town of Poltava. Two things I am absolutely certain about are that the group a) gets to daven and b) is well fed.

Jan. 11th, 2011 08:17 amOnly yesterday my mom's cousin asked to find out what happened to the Choral Synagogue in Kharkov, and this morning I got a text that the group is at the synagogue, even before I could forward the question.
The Kharkov Choral Synagogue was completed in 1913. The style of the building combined Romano Gothic and Mavritanic styles, which the Architectural Society of Kharkov viewed as 'reminiscent of the huge walls of ancient Palestine'.
During the Communist years, the synagogue was closed and converted into a public club and then into a sports complex. Only in 1990, with the arrival of the city's Chief Rabbi Moshe Moskowitz, was the Synagogue returned to the local Jewish community.

Drobitsky Yar is a ravine south east of Kharkov, Ukraine. In December 1941, Nazi troops invading the Soviet Union began killing local inhabitants over the following year. At the end of this period, some 30,000 people, mainly Jews, were killed. Notably on December 15, 1941, when the temperature was −15 degrees Celsius, over 15,000 Jews were shot. Nazis also executed Russians, Ukrainians and Armenians at this site.

Отмолились в Харьковской хоральной синагоге и поехали на поминальную службу у мемориала в Дробицком Яру, где 15 декабря 1941 года 15,000 евреев были убиты, а всего за год около 30,000 евреев. Там же убивали русских, украинцев и армян.

Kharkov update.
Jan. 11th, 2011 02:34 amOur firstborn along with the rest of the group after a 24 hour shlep have finally made it to the city of Kharkov (my mother's birth city). Thankfully, (as you all know, we Russians do everything together as a family see the video at Stern), we made our way to the airport, had a pleasure of spending a couple of hours with Avital before her flight, and gave her an unlocked cell phone. So, now I get updates via text messages from the very heart of the jewmanitarian humanitarian mission. Apparently, they were having dinner at a "great Greek place in the center of the city" very late at night. Another new fact that came to light is that Dmitry is still one of the most popular names in Ukraine, who knew?

Наша лягушка-путешественница забросала меня СМСками из ридной Украины. После почти 24-х часового путешествия, группа все-таки добралась до город-героя Харькова и их даже покормили в греческом ресторане в центре города. И как выяснилось, Дмитрий все еще одно из самых популярных имен на Украине.

В воскресенье мы побывали у Тали в колледже, где ейный папа выступил перед группой студентов, собирающихся какого-то черта в Харьков полюбоваться еврейскими общинами и красотой одного из городов моего детства. Но этот пост не о моем отношении к Харькову, родине моей мамы, а выступлении папы с дочкой на тему кому на Руси жить хорошо как я провел свое детство кто мы и с чем нас едят...

Sep. 12th, 2010 04:15 amВыползли из 3-х дневного сидения за столом. В среду вечером встречали новый год с нашими родителями и Полиной семьей. Шумно и шумно. Еды хватило, хотя приготовилось мало и я забыла про симаним. Что-то где-то я не так расчитала. В четверг впервые я попала в нашу перестроенную синагогу. Было непривычно и почти тесно. Пока еще не поняла чем важна была достройка, если мест свободных не было вообще. Но шофар звучал хорошо. Потом провели пол дня у друзей. Как правило, праздничные дни и шаббаты у нас заканчиваются приходом подружек. Пятница оказалась днем отдыха. В субботу, в Талин день рождения, с нами ланчевала Амира. Это была первая ее трапеза у нас после возвращения из Израиля. Когда мы уже закончили чаепитие и тортоедение из окна послышался звонкий голос: "А дома кто-то есть?" Мама с дедом бросили все дела и приехали поздравить Талечку с днем рождения. Дед вдруг рассказал нам об обороне Москвы зимой 1941-ого. Не успели мы выпить все вино, как девицы повалили валом. Талькины подружки из Стерна, потом из нашей школы, потом Нетины и Динины девочки, ну и к Мили тоже зашла Ноа. Талька только и делала, что метала на стол сладости и напитки. Хорошо, что в воскресенье хоть отдохнем.
